Farm to School Summer 2014Summer 2014 Farm to School Update:

This summer, Athens-Clarke County Farm to School provided 60 pounds of cucumbers for the Summer Feeding Program in Athens-Clarke County. The summer feeding program provided free lunches to Clarke County students May 27 through July 25. The meals were provided Monday through Friday at three Clarke County Schools: Howard B. Stroud Elementary, Whitehead Road Elementary and Barnett Shoals Elementary. Cucumbers were used to support the summer feeding program at H.B. Stroud Elementary School at Clarke Middle School.

Farm to Fork Posters were also created to be posted to support the farm fresh cucumbers. The posters included information about how cucumbers grow, how to prepare cucumbers, a cucumber recipe, fun nutritional facts and a farmer of the month feature.  This month, Clay Brady of Foster-Brady Farms was featured. Foster-Brady Farms provided 10 pounds of cucumbers.

The posters were printed by the Clarke County School Nutrition Office and displayed by the serving line at Clarke Middle School and Howard B. Stroud Elementary School.

Garden-based learning activities has been taking place at the West Broad Market Garden Education Demonstration Site this summer. 2nd to 4th grade aged female students enrolled in the summer camp program at the HT Edwards Boys and Girls Club have been participating in weekly educational field trips to the garden.

Activities have included a garden tour; cantaloupe soil testing and tasting activity; a cucumber lesson that included making our featured cucumber recipe, cucumber nachos and a black bean shelling activity that included sampling black bean based snacks such as bean salsa and chips.

Summer 2014 has been a productive one for Farm to School!
