Cooking Matters at Athens Area Homeless Shelter

Athens Land Trust facilitated its first Cooking Matters course at the Athens Area Homeless Shelter. The course took place between September 7th and October 26th on Sunday evenings. We used the Cooking Matters with Families curriculum for this course.

Working with the families at the Athens Area Homeless Shelter was truly a special experience. Typically, kids are not allowed to go into the kitchen at the shelter. For this course, however, kids were welcomed into the kitchen to learn and participate with their families. The kids really loved being in the kitchen and helping to prepare meals. Many of the mothers reported feeling more comfortable cooking with their children after participating in the course.

The participants enjoyed cooking with fresh, local produce provided by the West Broad Farmers Market each week. Many of the participants even began coming to the Farmers Market outside of class as a result of what they had learned.

At the end of the course, participants received the book, Cooking Matters for Families, including recipes and meal planning tips, as well as free cutting boards, meat thermometers, and a $25 Wal-Mart gift card.
